The inaugural season of the World Hockey Association (WHA), the 1972–73 campaign, saw twelve teams compete in seventy-eight games each. Established in June 1971 by Garry L. Davidson and Dennis A. Murphy, the league aimed to field teams across Canada and the United States. AVCO Financial Services Corporation donated the Avco World Trophy, the league's championship award, along with a $500,000 prize.
